Chief Buddhist Monk and Public Protest in Sittway, Rakhine State for Peace and Humanitarian Aid

Thousands of Buddhist monks and local residents are protesting in Sittway, capital city of Rakhine State, today.

This protest is led by some of chief monks and civil society leaders. The protesters reiterate its previous state of demands.

The statement demanded four points and stated that if those demand were not met nor responded by the governments, central and state, they would hold public protests. Therefore, this protest is held in Sittway and several townships.

The protester’s demands are:
(1)  To include Rakhine State under the Myanmar military bilateral ceasefire extension for two more months as it covers in Kachin and Shan states, starting from May 1 to June 30.
(2)  To allow UN and INGOs as well as local charity organizations to provide humanitarian assistances to Internally Displaced Persons.
(3)  To respect and follow existing laws and regulations of civil war engagement as well as collateral damages.

The public protests take places in Sittway, Pauktaw, Pannagyun, and Buthidaung townships. Ten of thousands of Buddhist monks and local people participate in the protects.
